The smallest Scottish newt, reaching a length of 9cm. It is also the least spectacular in appearance as even breeding males are not especially colourful and grow only a small, straight crest. Males also have enlarged, black, webbed hind feet and a tiny filament at the end of the tail. It is fairly widespread throughout the Lothians and may well be the commonest newt in Scotland, probably something of a UK stronghold for it.
